Coral, Tar, and Blood expands upon Dion’s first-ever glass piece, Blood Red Coral, offered by us last year in a (now sold-out) edition of seven. Both explore Dion’s interest in coral and its hallowed place in 16th and 17th-century cabinets of curiosities, but a thematic evolution is already visible in the space between the two. In Blood Red Coral, the central coral piece rises lightly from its base, in equilibrium with the hanging elements; in Coral, Tar, and Blood, a pool of tar heaped with vintage ephemera threatens that equilibrium from below.
We’re eager to see what emerges from his next foray into glass, but for now, this is the only Mark Dion glass edition available in the world. Proceeds from this edition help fund our programming, ensuring that our residency, exhibitions, and education programs can continue inspiring new ways of making in the next generation of artists.
