H.E.R.E. Journal is a new not-for-profit magazine about the Hudson Valley—the ecology, the people, and where the two meet. The biannual journal explores the region’s landscapes, wildlife, history, food, culture and the many ways the natural world shapes life here.
Published by The Understory, a Hudson Valley–based nonprofit supporting ecological and social resilience in the region, H.E.R.E. is edited by journalist and Modern Farmer founder Ann Marie Gardner, photo edited by David La Spina, designed by Matt Willey’s team at Pentagram, and founded by climate advocate and former Etsy VP of Values and Impact Matthew Stinchcomb.
The first issue focuses on shelter, ecology, food, and culture, with 152 pages of compelling stories and original photography by some of the most influential writers, thinkers, and creatives connected to the region, including Robin Wall Kimmerer, Deborah Berke, Victoria Johnson, Stephen Shore, Ashley Gilbertson, and Katie Stout.
